My search, pt. 3

I just stared at him thinking about what I had said that was so funny. He had died so long ago. Did I imagine that? Had that not really happened? What was really going on? He stopped laughing and looked at me with a little bit of pity.

– Honey, I didn’t come to see you. You came to see me. Do you understand? – I didn’t, not at first at least. I stared into the ocean. I was looking for an answer it couldn’t give me. And then I noticed.

– Is it getting brighter? – I asked, confused that the sky wasn’t getting darker as it usually does. The colors were starting to disappear, but not because of the dark. It seemed to be getting brighter.

– Shhh. – He said, shushing me into silence – Watch – He pointed to the ocean. I didn’t really understand what he wanted me to see, nothing was happening. And then, I saw it. A tiny sliver of sunshine breaking the horizon.

– Is that?… The sun? – He nodded, it was. The sun was rising over the Pacific Ocean. Before I could even realize how crazy this affirmation was, he spoke again.

– You’re crying – He said, without looking away from the sun. I gently touched my cheek looking for any sign that confirmed what he said. And I found it, a single tear had rolled down my cheek without me noticing.

– It’s so beautiful – I cried. I’ve always wanted to see the sun breaking the ocean on the horizon, but I never had the chance before. Because I lived in America, I would have to travel all the way to the Atlantic’s coast to see an ocean sunrise.

– How can we see this? – I asked him. He smiled at me once more.

– You’d be amazed at what you can see when you are on your way – – On my way? On my way where? – I didn’t really grasp what he meant. Was I… dying?
